My name is John Acquaro. I am a heart recipient from Ronkonkoma, New York. My family and I hold an annual charity bike ride on the beautiful North Fork of Long Island. Each year hundreds of participants from all over the Tri-State area come to show their support. We are hoping to increase that number year after year to raise awareness for the need for organ donation and to encourage people to sign the organ donor registry.

In our area, only 32 percent of our population are registered organ donors, which is well below the national average of 56%. There will be many people from the transplant community in attendance.

This is a 35-mile bike ride that starts at Osprey’s Dominion Vineyard in Peconic out to Orient Beach State Park and back. All proceeds from the event go to LiveOnNY to help increase the number of lives saved through public education, to support innovative projects that will save more lives and to provide support to donor and recipient families.

Seven years ago my life was saved by the miracle of a heart transplant and I do this to honor my donor and her family.

Anyone interested in participating can sign up online at www.active.com, keyword North Shore Bike Tour.

Thank you for helping me with this very worthy and livesaving cause.
